David Benavidez (born December 17, 1996) is an American professional boxer. He has held the World Boxing Council (WBC) interim light heavyweight title since June 2024, having previously held the WBC super middleweight title twice between 2017 and 2020. Claiming his first title at 20 years, eight months, three weeks and one day old, Benavidez holds the record as the youngest super middleweight title holder in history. He is ranked second by The Ring magazine, second by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, and fourth by BoxRec.

Consistently hearing and reading that he was avoiding David Morrell Jr. motivated David Benavidez to make their much-discussed fight a reality.

The unbeaten Benavidez was accustomed to boxing fans praising him throughout his fruitless pursuit of a career-defining showdown with Canelo Alvarez. It didn’t sit well with Benavidez that he was the accused ducker during his developing rivalry with Morrell, who will battle Benavidez in a 12-round light heavyweight fight February 1 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Benavidez demonstrated during the press conference to officially announce their pay-per-view main event Tuesday in Los Angeles just how irritated he is by trash talk from Morrell.

Morrell might have far less professional experience than Benavidez, but he has displayed an abundance of technical skill and power while winning secondary WBA belts in the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.

Benavidez nearly withdrew from his unanimous-decision victory over former WBC light heavyweight champ Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs) on June 15 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Phoenix native suffered torn ligaments in his right wrist, damage to the middle knuckle on his left hand and a cut over his right eye during training camp for his 12-round fight versus Gvozdyk.

David Benavidez became Canelo Alvarez's mandatory challenger on Saturday night with a unanimous decision win over Caleb Plant.

The Mexican Monster overcame his opponent's impressive boxing ability early on in their Las Vegas showdown and pummelled him in the latter stages to earn a clear win on the judges' scorecards, despite a bloodied Plant remarkably refusing to go down.

The fight began with the pair refusing to touch gloves despite referee Kenny Bayless attempting to force them to do so.

As the first bell rang, Plant immediately got behind his jab and used it effectively to dictate the opener without any major assault from Benavidez.

In round two, he continued outboxing his younger opponent and began to open up more with combinations. In the second half, Benavidez's confidence grew as he closed the gap to a tiring Plant and found a home for hard shots.

Plant's remarkable chin kept him in the contest, but as the final bell rang there was no doubt who was victorious. Benavidez was declared the winner with scores of 115-113, 116-112, 117-111.
