Welcome to this important Class 10 Chemistry session where we explore the periodic classification of elements and understand the trends in their properties as we move across periods and down groups in the Modern Periodic Table.

In this video, our expert faculty explains how elements are systematically organized based on their atomic number and how certain chemical and physical properties repeat periodically, making it easier to study and predict the behavior of elements.

Major Periodic Trends:
1. Atomic Radius (Atomic Radii): The atomic radius is the distance from the center of an atom’s nucleus to the outermost shell of electrons. It determines the size of the atom and varies across periods and groups in the periodic table.

2. Metallic Character: Metallic character refers to the tendency of an atom to lose electrons and form positive ions (cations). Metals are electropositive in nature and show high metallic character.

3. Non-Metallic Character: Non-metallic character is the tendency of an atom to gain electrons and form negative ions (anions). Non-metals are electronegative and usually accept electrons during chemical reactions.

4. Ionization Enthalpy (Ionization Energy): Ionization enthalpy is the amount of energy required to remove the outermost electron from an isolated neutral atom in its gaseous state. Higher ionization enthalpy means it's harder to remove an electron.

5. Electronegativity: Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract shared electrons towards itself in a chemical bond. Fluorine is the most electronegative element.

6. Electron Gain Enthalpy: Electron gain enthalpy is the amount of energy released or absorbed when an electron is added to a neutral atom in its gaseous state to form a negative ion.

7. Electron Affinity: Electron affinity is the amount of energy released when a neutral gaseous atom gains an electron to form a negative ion. It is often used interchangeably with electron gain enthalpy, though technically, electron affinity refers specifically to the energy released (and is always negative in sign).
