Nestled above the village of Ghosale in the Sahyadri mountains, Ghosalgad Fort rises like a natural monument shaped from ancient laterite. Built as a watchtower over Tamhanghat’s trade route, the fort has seen many rulers, from the Nizamshahis and Adilshahis to the Marathas under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Its walls and bastions, though weathered, guard the secrets of shifting dynasties and resisted many sieges, including a famous episode when Siddhi’s army withdrew after the news of Afzal Khan’s defeat.
The hike meanders up rock-cut steps and through forest, offering sweeping vistas of Murud’s creeks and the rolling Konkan plains. At the top, discover stone ramparts, remnants of ancient gateways, water cisterns carved deep into the rock, and the marks of old cannon placements.
