If your trade post does not feel like it is working part of the problem might be game bugs. However, not doing some simple things will make it seem as if it is also not working as intended. You need to assign all worker slots as well as the livestock slots on the advanced tab. Also, the more trading post you have, the more efficient everything will flow.
