Lord Louis Mountbatten, Earl of Burma and last Viceroy of India, was assassinated by Irish Republican Army (IRA) on August 27, 1979. Lord Mountbatten was an uncle of Prince Philip and a cousin of Queen Elizabeth. Mountbatten was killed because of his royal connections. The provisional wing of the IRA claimed responsibility for his killing. Story of Mountbatten's killing, affectionately called by the royals as ''Uncle Dickie,'' is part of the opening episode of season 4 of Netflix series The Crown.
