Inside one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the whole world, full of embassies and homes lived in by celebrities and political figures, sits a $10 million abandoned mansion that was owned by Saadi Gaddafi, the son of Libya’s former ruler, Muammar Gaddafi. Before his fall, he was one of the most feared and controversial leaders in modern history, and for over four decades, he ruled Libya with absolute control. He ordered assassinations on foreign soil, funded militant groups across the world, and openly threatened world leaders who opposed him. In the 1980s, he was accused of planning the bombing of a Berlin nightclub that killed many American soldiers, and later, the Lockerbie bombing that brought down Pan Am Flight 103, killing 270 people. However, Muammar wasn't only about violence. He used Libya’s oil money to make the nation debt-free, and provided free healthcare, education, and homes for citizens, as well as building massive infrastructure projects like the Great Man-Made River, one of the largest engineering feats in the world. His son, Saadi Gaddafi, lived a similar life and spent his father’s wealth across the world and Europe. In 2009, he bought this luxury mansion for around $10 million. Featuring 7 bedrooms, an indoor pool, a home theater, marble floors, and even walls that would sparkle with imitation diamonds, he made sure that it included everything he ever wanted. But in 2011, when his father was killed, Saadi fled the country, leaving everything frozen in time in the mansion. Just days later, activists calling themselves Topple the Tyrants got inside and occupied the home, hanging banners from the roof and inviting reporters inside. They said it was no longer Saadi’s house, but the Libyan people’s, which was later confirmed by a court ruling that it was bought with stolen Libyan state funds. More than a decade later, the mansion sits abandoned, once owned by a family that controlled billions, so come along with me as we venture inside and see what's left.
