It is not so common for an automaker to show a concept car and live up to the promise of bringing it to production. Most of the concept cars we see are just that, concepts. Very few of them have made it to the market as actual cars. However, Mitsubishi has lived up to this, bringing a concept car they introduced some years ago into production. Mitsubishi just revealed a new SUV, which is expected to debut soon. And when you look closely at it, you will realize that it looks like the 2022 Mitsubishi XFC concept. But does it really live up to the concept car shown all those years ago? What does the 2024 Mitsubishi XFC have to offer? Let’s find out, shall we?
Hello everyone, and welcome back to our channel. Today, we will look at the 2024 Mitsubishi XFC as we find out whether it lives up to the concept from 2022. Mitsubishi has recently unveiled a new SUV that has not been in their lineup. This is a completely new SUV, bringing something they never had before. It was previewed in Indonesia, and it is expected to make its official debut on August 10. The only thing that Mitsubishi revealed was the exterior design of the new SUV, which has also yet to be named. All this was at a special event in Indonesia, as the automaker was announcing the commencement of pre-orders before its official premiere. This new model has gotten most of its inspiration from the Mitsubishi XFC concept, which was showcased in 2022. In addition, it is specifically designed for the ASEAN markets. So, if you thought that you would get it outside of this region, I'm sorry to disappoint you. Production of this new SUV is expected to take place at the company’s Krama Yudha plant in Indonesia, with the first deliveries scheduled to be made sometime in November 2023.
Before this new Mitsubishi SUV was revealed, many people wanted this Mitsubishi-engineered model to replace the old ASX. However, the rebadged Renault Captur in Europe has already stepped into this role. In fact, this concept positions itself in the compact rather than the subcompact segment. This means that the concept XFC slots between the ASX and the Eclipse Cross with regard to the footprint.
We have already seen how the exterior looks, thanks to the prototypes as they were revealed. However, as much as we don’t know what the interior will look like, we can make a few speculations. We can assume that it will appear to be very close to production status, setting aside the light-colored upholstery and the fancy textures.
In addition, Mitsubishi has promised "class-leading interior space" for the new SUV, as well as safe handling on any terrain and in any weather conditions. However, the company never clarified whether the new SUV will come with all-wheel drive or will only be a front-wheel-drive vehicle. In addition, they also never revealed what platform it would be based on or the powertrains it would use. But with everything we know so far, including its various driving modes, we can tell that it will be a very practical car. And something worth noting is that this will probably be the first Mitsubishi to come with a Wet driving mode specifically designed for the often flooded roads of ASEAN countries.
For Mitsubishi, this new small crossover is only one of many vehicles that are in planning and ready for production. This is because Mitsubishi plans a product onslaught. The next-generation Triton has already been introduced and is also known as the L200 in some markets. And as its production date comes closer, it is expected to join the Delica Mini, hybrid Xpander, and Renault Clio-based Colt supermini in the lineup. And according to a product roadmap that was shared in March, Mitsubishi will produce a ladder-frame SUV by 2025. And in addition to this, there will also be a three-row SUV and a two-row hybrid SUV at the same time.
Further in the lineup, Mitsubishi is planning to release a fully electric pickup truck and a two-row SUV, which will also come without a combustion engine. All this is slated to be released by 2028. Mitsubishi also plans to bring additional vehicles that will be developed with partners Renault and Nissan.
All we can say is that Mitsubishi is planning on releasing a bunch of new cars, and they have already started with this new XFC. And even though that is not its official name, it is already promising.
