Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat says he's optimistic about the progress of the Middle East peace process after speaking to U-S President Bill Clinton.

Arafat's comments came after a meeting with the President of the World Bank, James Wolfensohn, in Gaza City on Thursday.

The Palestinian leader said Clinton had assured him that the new Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak would implement agreements signed with the Palestinians.

0010 After posing for photographs with Wolfensohn, Arafat said he was optimistic about the progress of the Middle East peace process following his telephone conversation with U-S President Bill Clinton on Wednesday night.

0031 Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has got President Clinton to agree to set a loose time frame of 15 months for negotiating the peace accords.

0041 Palestinian Minister of Planning, Nabil Shaath, said Clinton had assured Arafat that the peace process will be pushed forward.

"I think the telephone call (from President Clinton) was very assuring, it assured President Arafat both of the commitment that of Mr Barak to implement the Wye River Agreement but also of the commitment to the United States to make sure that the Wye River agreement is implemented and that the peace process be fully back on track and to assure Mr Arafat that it would take another effort like the Wye, that President Clinton is willing to commit himself to see the peace process totally successful in the Middle East and particularly on the Palestinian front."
