▬▬▬▬ Transcript ▬▬▬▬

As a huge fan of cinema history, I created this feature because I didn’t see any other platform that visually presents film movements in a timeline. This timeline shows how these movements influenced each other and where they stand in the history of cinema. We’ve added around 150 different film movements in chronological order so far, and there’s a lot to explore.

At the top of the page, we’ve included some helpful filters. For instance, you can search by nationality if you’re only interested in film movements from a specific country. If we filter by French cinema, we can narrow it down to movements like French Impressionist Cinema, Poetic Realism, French New Wave, and even more niche movements like Cinéma Vérité or New French Extremity.

Of course, you can also choose any other country. For example, filtering by the Soviet Union brings up movements like Soviet Montage and other influential styles from that region. If we remove all filters, it brings up every film movement in the database again.

You can also filter by decade, which is super helpful for students or researchers. If you’re doing a project on the 1960s or 1970s, for instance, you can use these filters to narrow down the film movements from those decades. This feature is great if you’re working on a school or university project, or just if you’re interested in exploring a specific era of cinema.

As you scroll down the page, you’ll find general information about each film movement—when it took place, its country of origin (which sometimes includes multiple countries), and notable directors and films associated with the movement. For example, clicking on Cinema Novo will bring up more detailed information about that movement, its directors, and some of the major films within it. The films are presented in reverse chronological order, and while we haven’t included every film just yet, we’re constantly adding more.

Now, I want to show you the Film Movement Map, which is another really cool feature. You can access it from the main Film Movements page by clicking the View Map button. This is a visual representation of where different film movements originated around the world. You can zoom in and out, and when you hover over an icon, you’ll see a movie poster representing the most notable film of that particular movement.

For example, hovering over the Hong Kong New Wave shows you the most iconic film from that movement, and you can click on it for more information. The same applies to other movements like the Iranian New Wave—you’ll see Close-Up as the most notable film, and clicking on it brings up tons of information about the Iranian New Wave movement itself. You can even click to view a timeline of the movement, or explore the films associated with it.

This map feature is available both on desktop and mobile, though it’s a bit easier to navigate on a larger screen. You can explore different countries and click through to learn about the various movements that shaped global cinema. For instance, if you click on Free Cinema from the United Kingdom, you’ll be presented with a detailed timeline and more information about that movement’s films and directors.
