First appearing on their 1990 album "Empire", it was released as the fourth single from the album in May 1991 in the US, and August 1991 in Europe.

Running at 5:22, the song was written by Queensrÿche guitarist Chris DeGarmo and lead singer Geoff Tate.

Geoff Tate said, "In general, it's a song about being lonely and being away from the person that you love. And dealing with the time spent apart. It explores the idea of longing, what that is. And Jet City, of course, is the nickname for Seattle, where it all ties in."

Geoff Tate's first wife, whom he was dating when he wrote this song, was a flight attendant. When asked if the song was about her, he replied, "I guess it is, in a sense."
