I sang this song with my bluegrass band Long Road Home for many years. We opened almost every show with it. It's on our first record!

One of my favorite quotes from history comes from William Tecumseh Sherman:

"I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation." paired with his quote "War is hell"

It's hell for so many more than just the soldiers fighting. It's hell for everyone.

Great songs help us understand better. They help us understand others, they help others understand us. They give us a glimpse into an experience or personality in a way that helps us not just imagine, but helps us feel. This song does that for me. It's broken hearts all around, and shows us a glimpse of what "war is hell" actually means.

Let's avoid it at all costs.
