This is the fourth part of these series where we talk about how we use the mould to make a carbon fiber rally fairing.
To make the mould we are using the uni-mould tooling system from easycomposites. First a release agent is being used. We've used the chemical release agent from easy composites here. You have to apply the liquid on a piece of lintfree cloth and apply a new coat every 15 minutes. You'll see the release agent evaporate after each coat. After applying 5-6 coats you wait one hour to make sure that all the solvent evaporates.
For the lay up we’ve used a twill weave carbon fiber with some aramid, Kevlar fiber as well. The carbon fiber will add some stiffness and the aramid fiber will help with impact. The lay up is then followed by some peelply, that will help to remove all the vacuum supply once the resin infusion is done. Followed by an infusion mesh that will help the epoxy resin to flow evenly through the laminate. To add pressure to compact all the fibers we are using a vacuumbag that is taped on the mould with some tacky tape. Once everything is under vacuum you can proceed with the resin infusion, also called VARTM. This is a process where epoxy resin is sucked through the laminate while still runny. Once the epoxy resin is in, you close the infusion line and vacuum line and let it cure for over 48 hours for good results. As epoxy resin we’ve used IN2 infusion resin from Easy composites. You can choose the hardener fast or slow. The good thing is that these can be combined to reach a potlife inbetween. Once the resin has cured you can remove the bag, infusion mesh and peelply, leaving your part that can be demoulded from the mould then.
Final steps would be sanding the part, trimming and fitting. After sanding the part we went for a matte finish, this is a personal preference but can be high gloss as well.
Once everything is done the part can be mounted on the motorcycle and your done.
That’s the last step on how we’ve made this motorcycle rally fairing, starting with shaping the part in part 1, to finishing the plug in part 2, making mould in part 3 and making the carbonfiber part in this video.
