The Toyota Century was introduced as the company’s flagship model in 1967. The name “Century” was chosen to honor the 100th birthday of Toyota Industries founder Sakichi Toyoda. A phoenix-like bird is associated with the vehicles logo, the Fenghuang, which represents the Imperial House of Japan. Originally powered by a 2.6 liter V8 before increasing displacement to 4.0 liters for 1982, the Century was a rare sight on Japanese streets. The tax on larger displacement engines meant the model was only purchased by those in the top tax bracket; they were often reserved the Japanese Royal Family and other heads of state. Subtle cloth was chosen for the interior material and almost every feature, including the vent windows, was power assisted. Assembly was mainly done by hand and production was very limited, with figures averaging around 200 cars per year. Considering that the Century is a model that was exclusive to the Japanese market, examples are rarely seen in the United States and when they do come to market, they are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
