Drawing Steamboat Willie - Public Domain Day!

January 1st is #PublicDomainDay, which means all published works from the year 1928 loose their copyrights, making them essentially free to the public.

Believe it or not, the original Mickey Mouse cartoon “Steamboat Willie” is now Public Domain, after many years of push back from the Disney corporation, meaning this version of Mickey is now free to any and all.

Many culturally important works are available to the public domain, such as Sherlock Holmes, Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, and much more. Essentially, the public domain is to allow the arts and culture to flourish and grow, as it is important that works are not held onto by monopolies that attempt to control the culture.
