"They Shouldn't Call Iceland, Iceland" was created in 1978 by the Iceland Tourist Board (:11) as a way to increase tourism to the country. The film dives deep into the country’s climate, varied countryside and rich Viking history. It tours historic cemeteries and breaks down politics and class of the invigorating country. It is a Film Author’s Production (:23). Growth of the country is discussed (:33). Hot geysers shoot up (1:02). A sign notes the capital and largest city (1:24); Reykjavik. Steam spews from tiny red homes (1:30). Hot springs are harnessed for energy. Shots cover small residential homes in the area (1:42) as well as the stunning white chapel Hateigskirkja church (1:45). A woman inspects king sized wooden tankards once known to held mead for the Vikings (9:35). The Viking diet carried into modern days (9:42). Close shots show piles of lump fish caviar (9:59). Tourists travel over high volcanic hills (14:58). A couple enjoys a pool of hot water within a secluded cave (15:28). A view from the country side of Reykjavik (16:50) looks into city scrapers. Iceland’s national cemetery (21:29) hosts the tomb of Jonas Hallgrimsson (21:34). A friendly dog wanders outside of Bessastaoir; the official home of the president of Iceland (21:55). Scenes follow from January of 1973 (24:41) as the volcano erupted. A seal scurry’s through water (24:47). Stunning shots capture the volcano erupting over cold waters (24:56); vessels pump seawater over molten earth. Icelanders resurface following five months of volcanic holocaust (25:15). Heimaey appears with a much smaller population (25:30). Red nosed puffin birds (25:36) play in the grass. Icelanders climb the crater of the calm volcano (25:54). The lava line is compared to the location of residential homes (26:08). Locals play in the dirt (26:16) still warm from the recent eruption. Youth from Heimaey toss hay (27:09) over fresh dirt.
