Pushkin's Fatal Duel Site | Where "Russian Shakespeare" Was Mortally Wounded | Александр Пушкин

Описание к видео Pushkin's Fatal Duel Site | Where "Russian Shakespeare" Was Mortally Wounded | Александр Пушкин

Alexander Pushkin, considered Russia's equivalent of Shakespeare, was mortally wounded on Jan. 27, 1837, as the result of a lost duel against French military officer Georges-Charles de Heeckeren d'Anthès (whom we will refer to in the video as Georges d'Anthès). While this duel took place in the 1800s, the site where it took place still exists today in St. Petersburg and is marked with a commemorative obelisk and special, engraved stones. Come along with us to check out a tragic part of Russian history.

Mikhail Lermontov verse:
"Погиб поэт! Невольник чести пал оклеветанный молвой, с свинцом в груди и жаждой мести поникнув гордой головой."
TRANSLATION: "The poet is dead! The slave of honor fell slandered by rumor, with lead in his chest and a thirst for revenge, drooping his proud head."
