Galaxy Mega vs Galaxy Grand

Comparison of Galaxy Grand with Galaxy Mega (6.3 and 5.8)

One should remember that Galaxy Grand came out sometime around end of January and it's almost been half a year. Naturally, technology betters itself and its possible to churn out better, affordable devices.

Keeping that in mind, let's start comparing the two.

The Galaxy Grand (dual SIM enabled) was a huge hit in India and came with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean which is now one level old. The Mega devices not only feature the latest Android 4.2.2 but also come with the latest TouchWiz Nature UX that comes with a host of new features, tweaks and revamped interface.

From a technical stand point, the Galaxy Grand seems to shy in front of the Mega 6.3 and Mega 5.8 in terms of display. The Grand is a 5 inch regular TFT display with a low resolution of 480 x 800 pixels whereas the Mega 5.8 sports a 5.8 inch 540 x 960 px display and Mega 6.3 comes with a gigantic 6.3 inch Super Clear LCD and a 720p HD display.

Also, the display quality of Mega 6.3 is far better than that of the Galaxy Grand given the fact that it is a Super Clear LCD with a higher resolution. This means Mega 6.3 delivers a sharper, richer and more colorful viewing experience than both the Galaxy Grand and Mega 5.8.On the other hand, Mega 5.8's display is also slightly better than Grand's display. Colors don't wash out easily and viewing angles are much better than the Grand.

In terms of performance, all devices are incrementally better. The Grand comes with a 1.2 GHz Dual Core processor with 1 GB RAM, the Mega 5.8 with a 1.4 GHz Dual Core processor with 1.5 GB RAM and Mega 6.3 with a 1.7 GHz Dual Core processor with 1.5 GB RAM. Naturally, the performance of Mega 6.3 is better than the others. Gaming on all devices, however, is quite impressive and lag-free. There are gaming videos available for all 3. So feel free to check them out. I tried playing Asphalt 7, Modern Combat 4 and Need For Speed Most Wanted in all. There were no issues whatsoever.

The Galaxy Grand has however prompted many consumers to complain about its performance, battery life and smooth operation. Many have complained about its laggy UI, slow performance, quick battery deterioration and unusual hangs.

The downside of Mega devices is obviously the size. Though both of them are remarkably thin they completely disable single handed use, quite uncomfortable to carry and hold in your hand while talking. The Mega devices in fact qualify to be tablets in all fairness, with a quick calling capability.

The Mega 5.8 is surprisingly a dual SIM device as well with 2 micro SIM card slots. The Mega 6.3, however, is a single regular SIM device. All 3 devices can expand memory up to 64 GB with a microSD card.

The Mega 6.3 also comes with an IR LED Port that can be used to change channels or act as a remote control for almost any TV, set top box, music player or DVD manufacturer in the world. This can come really handy.

The camera interface in the Mega devices have been hugely improved upon and seem to follow the same interface design seen in the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy camera. You have sound and shot as well among some of the modes. The Mega 6.3 also features a unqiue 'remote viewfinder' facility that lets you make another Galaxy device to be the remote control for your Mega's camera via Wi-fi direct connection establishment.

There are obviously many more differences in terms of hardware, body, build, design and interface and I possibly can't write everything. So watch the video and let me know what you think about it.

As always, don't forget to subscribe ! :)
