2020 was an exciting year for the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. A collective gasp rippled through the watch-collecting community as the Big Crown unveiled a stunning collection of vibrantly colored OP watches. The rainbow of hues, including yellow, green, coral red, pink, and even turquoise blue, were seemingly inspired by vintage Rolex Stella dials, which were initially developed for the Middle East market and have since become cult favorites among collectors in the know.

The modern Rolex Stella dials also ushered in two more exciting 2020 upgrades, the first 41mm Oyster Perpetual and a new generation of time-only movements, i.e., the caliber 3230.

Just a few short years later, Rolex quietly, and much to the dismay of many collectors, discontinued some dial colors for specific model sizes. Coral red and yellow were discontinued completely, while the turquoise – aka “Tiffany Blue” – was removed from the 41mm lineup, among other discontinuation.

What does all of that have to do with the Celebration dial Rolex?

Rolex released the watch in 2023, decorating the dial with colorful bubbles that many quickly noticed resembled the dials from the 2020 release. Its design is unlike anything we’ve ever seen from Rolex before and is already stealing the hearts of horology enthusiasts worldwide with its quirky and colorful watch face.

Imagine our delight when the team unboxed the example featured in this video for us to review in a live unboxing.

As of the release of this video, Rolex produces the bubbly new dial in 31mm, 36mm, and 41mm. The example we have here hails from the 36mm collection and is powered by the caliber 3230, the same movement powering the Air-King, No Date Submariner, Explorer, and Sea-Dweller Deepsea Challenge.

The celebration motif is set against a sea of turquoise blue, one of the most popular 2020 OP dial colors. The scattering of different-sized mini dials is outlined in black for high contrast and recalls the yellow, turquoise, coral red, green, and pink Stella-inspired dials.

While somewhat unusual for Rolex, this “celebration” of breaking deeply rooted watchmaking traditions was well-received and will undoubtedly become a treasured collector’s item for future generations.

At its core, the Celebration Rolex is a classically-elegant ref. 126000. The watch is rated waterproof up to 100 meters/330 feet and sports a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, three-link Oyster bracelet, folding Oysterclasp with convenient 5mm Easylink extension, and highly resilient 904L-grade Oystersteel.

Chromalight, Rolex’s patented luminescent material, fills the indices and hands, providing up to 8 continuous hours of lume. Even more fascinating is the movement, which boasts an impressive 70-hour power reserve and anti-magnetic capabilities.
