One Nation One Election Highlights: Kovind Led Committee Recommends Constitutional Amendments

One Nation one Election: In a significant development, the High-Level Committee on One Nation, One Election has submitted its exhaustive report to President Droupadi Murmu. Led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, the committee extensively deliberated on the need for simultaneous elections, considering various implications. The report underscores the importance of amending the constitution to enable simultaneous elections at different governance levels. Simultaneous elections, popularly referred to as “One Nation, One Election”, aim to synchronize polls for Lok Sabha, State Assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats. According to the government's FAQ, the need for simultaneous elections arises due to various reasons including reduced government expenditure, minimized disruption to governance, and alleviation of voters' fatigue. The committee's key recommendations include amendments for a single electoral roll and election ID, as well as provisions for handling scenarios like hung houses.
