Navajo Code Talker on Basic Training: 'It's Like I Hot to Heaven.'

The way MacDonald remembers it, first you had to go through boot camp, then combat training, and if you passed both of those, you were sent to communication school.

That's where he was taught how to use different types of radio equipment, make repairs in the field and run telephone lines from tree to tree.

There are only five living code talkers as of September 2019: Peter MacDonald, Joe Vandever Sr., Samuel F. Sandoval, Thomas H. Begay and John Kinsel Sr.
