As I reflect on my life journey so far, particularly these core moments:
Losing my Dad when I was 9 years old
Using fitness as a way to manage grief
Becoming a national champion bodybuilder
Graduating from an Ivy League medical school
Starting the Fit Father Project & Fit Mother Project

I can distill what I’ve learned into 3 stages of mastering healthy living.

Stage 1 - Learn the rules
→ Sugar is addictive.
→ Focus on protein first.
→ Find your favorite ‘go-to’ healthy foods.
→ Find exercise and physical activities you love.
→ Eat what agrees with you.
→ Be intentional with cheat meals.
→ Give yourself some grace.

Stage 2 - Practice the rules
→ Try different types of exercise.
→ Research and test supplements.
→ Get bloodwork to track improvements.
→ Practice the rules in unfamiliar places (eating out, on vacation, etc.).
→ Pay attention to what foods bloat you and what makes you feel good.

Stage 3 - Break the rules
→ Try a juice fast for a few weeks.
→ Try a water fast for several days.
→ Once you’ve gained experience, you can relax a bit more.
→ You can push extremes and play with new concepts or side quests.
→ Try more extreme diets, like vegan on one side or carnivore on the other.
→ You have the knowledge and frameworks to get back on track at any time.
→ You can ‘dial in’ when you need to, for a particular goal, but always get back on track.

Make healthy living a game or an adventure.
Explore these different levels of learning, practicing, and breaking the rules.
Reflect on where you’re currently at.
If you’re at stage 1, you’re in the right place.
