Betsy Hit the trail with Alison - big Kauri hunting in Waipoua Forest. Sighted our first quarry... Tāne Mahuta, The Lord Of The Forest, resting in a small clearing, apparently cornered by another tribe. Wary of his superior height and weight advantage, unequalled in the domain, we struck quickly and fired our shots capturing the beast resplendent in his glory. Our next target, Te Matua Ngahere, has the widest footprint. The fattest kauri living today. Perhaps older and wiser, this specimen proved more elusive. Following our keen tracking instincts, which fortunately correlated perfectly with a well hewn trail, we were soon on his tail. BANG! Got him! The widest tree in the whole of NZ. WOW! What a whopper. Camera began to feel quite a lot heavier. Alison, gob akimbo, compared normal twig like trees with Te Matua’s permanently planted gigantic grey elephant leg. We could look... but not touch. Accumulative pounding of the lightest feet would compact the soil and squeeze roots dry. The 2013 drought saw a nearby stream diverted to Tāne Mahuta, wilting in the heat. 2000 years old is middle aged for kauri. Our trophies hard won we pondered upon a slender baby kauri. In two millennia... the Queen of the Forest? That night, whilst the kauris of Trounson stood sentinel, Tāne at their head, guarding all his children, all living things in his bright creation, we slept... safe... in his shadow.
