Winter Pruning a Granny Smith Apple Tree in Phoenix, AZ

Описание к видео Winter Pruning a Granny Smith Apple Tree in Phoenix, AZ

We continue The Green Yard's, Winter pruning videos with a classic apple variety, our Granny Smith Apple Tree. These apples are actually native to Australia and were discovered in the mid 1800's. They have a tart flavor and a very green skin. So far we have only had one very small apple produced in The Green Yard but this year proves to be much more promising with several flower buds already on display. It is important when pruning to establish what shape you want your tree to follow. This is the first time winter pruning this tree that has been in the ground for almost three years. I found a strong central trunk to follow, choose support limbs and ultimately cut away any crossing or damaged limbs while focusing on the long term structure I want in the future. Hopefully this tree produces fruit this year and this pruning allows for a strong tree structure that will continue to produce fruit into the future.
