"Music for the Muses". Josef Strauss appeared at the head of his orchestra on 11th February 1863 in the Redoutensaal at the Vienna Hofburg palace. He conducted the dance music at the elegant student ball because his brother Johann had taken ill and his physicians insisted that he showed refrain from composing, Josef was forced to write the expected dedication waltz. Josef Strauss thus created the Musen-Klänge waltz which he dedicated to the "very noble student ball sponsors". It was especially significant that those ladies of the aristocracy should have come together on the student ball committee and assumed its sponsorship. Students had fallen into disfavor at court since participating in the "revolutionary events" of 1848 and were finding it very difficult to rid themselves of the induction imposed on their organization at the time. That is why they greatly welcomed the support of those "very noble sponsors". And the ladies indeed had reason to be satisfied with the Musen-Klänge waltz dedicated to them by Josef Strauss. This piece holds its own against the "Patronessen" waltz Op. 264, by Johann Strauss, composed in 1862 under similar circumstances.

"Música para las Musas". Josef Strauss apareció al frente de su orquesta el 11 de febrero de 1863 en la Redoutensaal del palacio Hofburg de Viena. Dirigió la música de baile en el elegante baile estudiantil porque su hermano Johann se había enfermado y sus médicos insistieron en que se abstuviera de componer, Josef se vio obligado a escribir el esperado vals de dedicación. Josef Strauss creó así el vals Musen-Klänge que dedicó a las "muy nobles patrocinadoras del baile de los estudiantes". Fue especialmente significativo que esas damas de la aristocracia se reunieran en el comité de baile estudiantil y asumieran su patrocinio. Los estudiantes habían caído en desgracia en la corte desde que participaron en los "eventos revolucionarios" de 1848 y les resultaba muy difícil deshacerse de la inducción impuesta a su organización en ese momento. Por eso acogieron con gran agrado el apoyo de aquellos “muy nobles patrocinadores”. Y las damas tenían motivos para estar satisfechas con el vals Musen-Klänge que les dedicó Josef Strauss. Esta pieza se mantiene firme frente al vals "Patronessen" Op. 264, de Johann Strauss, compuesta en 1862 en circunstancias similares.
