A third submersible has been found abandoned in Solomon Islands waters in a year.
Authorities suspect the semi-submersible vessel was used to smuggle drugs, but it remains unclear whether it came from South America or within the region.
Local Fourau villagers Reubenson and Martin Fugui from Malita province found the suspected ‘narco sub’ without its engines, cargo and crew.
Upon closer inspection, they found ‘Made in Colombia, 2024’ engraved on its internal pipes.
ABC Pacific reporter Chrisnrita Aumanu-Leong says the region has been grappling with drug problems as international syndicates exploit under-resourced border control to use the Pacific as a transit point for more lucrative markets such as Australia.
