There is a Japanese term for a“disease” called 中二病 or “Eighth-grader syndrome,” named after the approximate time you get infected. It refers to cringy attention-seeking actions and words by these kids who fantasize about having special powers or being the chosen one.

So middle school is around the time Japanese kids transition from enjoying wholesome manga and anime to action-filled ones with more complex and darker storylines, and most importantly, characters with darker superpowers.

The all-time classic is Hiei from Yuyuhakusho. He has all this bandage on him. It’s not because he’s clumsy. He has bandage on his right hand to suppress his otherwise deadly dark dragon power, which was the coolest thing in the eyes of middle schoolers.

In Japanese schools, if you die your hair, get a tatoo or pierce any part of your body, you’re out. Those things are not tolerated. So there isn’t much teenagers can do to self explore. But bandage is a loophole.

So in every grade, there was at least one kid who came in with bandage on his right arm. And he would limp when he walked because Hiei does that after he releases his superpower and the damage is too great on his arm or whatever.

So a friend asks, “Hey, are you okay?”

And the guy is like,
お前には関係のないことだ。早くおれの右手から離れろ…!!
You do not have to know. Stay away from my right arm…!

So now this friend doesn’t feel worry for him. He feels hatred.

This is what we call a めんどくさい人 Mendokusai hito = A difficult person AKA a chore 😂.

So now that Japanese anime is all over the world, watch out for yourself. Don’t become a chore because I have been infected 😂😂😂.
