You can't borrow against assets inside an IRA. That's the rule.

IRAs are qualified retirement accounts with specific restrictions. Borrowing against the principal is considered a prohibited transaction. Do it anyway and the IRS treats your entire IRA as distributed - meaning you owe taxes on everything immediately, plus penalties if you're under 59.5.

Self-directed IRAs let you hold crypto, but the same borrowing prohibition applies. Your XRP sits there until you take a distribution, which can't happen penalty-free until 59.5 (with some exceptions for hardship, first home, etc.).

"Generate income from yields in side pockets" - if you mean earning yield on the XRP inside the IRA through staking or lending, that income stays in the IRA and compounds tax-deferred. You still can't access it without taking a distribution.

The tradeoff is clear: IRAs give you tax advantages (traditional = deduct contributions, Roth = tax-free growth) but lock up the money until retirement. If you need liquidity before then, don't put it in an IRA.

Some people hold XRP both inside and outside retirement accounts - IRA for long-term, taxed account for liquidity. That way you get tax benefits on part of it while keeping flexibility on the rest.

Just understand the restrictions before you put significant assets into qualified accounts. Tax benefits don't help if you can't access the money when you need it.
