Council on the Aging Chief Executive Ian Yates says there are reports of aged care residents becoming distressed at being alone during the pandemic as carers have completely separated them from all family contact.

Mr Yates told Sky News there were strict limitations on visitors to aged care facilities however there were ways to manage social distancing without causing harm to the patient or family.

“What the prime minister, what the national cabinet said is that you need to look at these things on a case by case basis, you need to exercise compassion, you need to follow the standards we have in Australia for our aged care system,” he said.

“You should be communicating and facilitating communication with family, I’m telling you that have many providers who are not doing that.

“We fully respect that providers need to keep their residents safe, but that also includes keeping them safe emotionally.”
