“We used to live on Bel Ombre Sugar estate. We used to live as a community; I remember my father and grandfather going to fish in a small nearby Barachois. The Barachois is between Le Telfair Hotel and C Beach Club. There used to be a river flowing there, where we could fish. We use to catch milton fish there. - Marilyne Monroe

“In Bel Ombre, we have several wetlands that still exist. There are many organisms living in these ecosystems such as different species of crabs and fish including 'Cabo' fish; 'Crab Carley,' 'Crab Rouge;' we can also find some species of eels there that people eat. Many families rely on the wetlands for subsistence. Wetlands are rich in biodiversity and provide ecosystem services - they prevent erosion and provide food for people.” - Sakel Fokeer (Rolo)

“In between these two 'greens,' there was a wide expanse of sea grasses. This seagrass bed was around three football field long with a width of 10-20 metres but this has now disappeared. Seagrasses plays a crucial role in the environment. Even if they are smaller in size, seagrasses have the capacity to sequester larger amount of carbon dioxide faster than much taller terrestrial trees and forests. Seagrasses are also a crucial habitat for marine organisms, such as the sea cucumber, 'cordon' etc. These organisms help to purify the water. If we are able to eat fish that are safe for consumption, it is in part thanks to these organisms and the seagrass beds.” - Sakel Fokeer

“The natural drains are still there, but unfortunately only the bottom ends still exist, while the source and mid-stream have been filled up and built on.When we build on these natural drains, this deviates the water to places that it shouldn't be going to.” - Robin Coormiah

“Longtil feels more like a part of the sea than land. The whole area is more sand than soil. So, as soon as you get some rain, even if for just an hour, the groundwater level rises, causing the area to flood, and big puddles of water to accumulate everywhere”- Deven

“Previously, this was all covered by the sea but a revetment has now been constructed. So now, we have a green space here.
That's what people fail to understand. Looking at this, we might assume that our coast is getting better for us, more aesthetically pleasing. But that's not true. The sea is getting closer to us and can at some point submerge us! Over the years, I'll say that we might have lost some 10-15 metres of land between the road and the beach.”- Robin Coormiah
