"I would consider the source and leave it at that. I''m telling you that we are not conducting those sorts of activities, and to the best of everybody''s abilities to determine who might be across the government, we''ve been able to satisfactorily convince ourselves that it''s not going on out of this department. And that''s not meant to imply that it is anywhere else, but it''s not for me to speak for any other departments. It''s our belief it is not happening in other departments. It''s just not happening."

STORYLINE:

The Pentagon has denied it''s using aerial surveillance drones to spy on Iran''s nuclear plants.

Larry Di Rita, chief spokesman for US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, asked reporters at a news conference on Tuesday to "consider the source" of the reports, meaning the government in Tehran.

"It''s not happening out of this department," Di Rita said, adding that "it''s our belief it is not happening in other departments".

Iranian officials say US spy planes have been flying over its airspace over the past year, gathering intelligence on military and nuclear facilities.

The United States accuses Iran of having a secret nuclear weapons programme.

Iran insists its nuclear activities are for peaceful energy purposes.
