A laminectomy or laminotomy is a surgical procedure designed to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves in the neck or back caused by spinal stenosis—a condition where the spaces within your spine narrow, leading to nerve compression. During a laminectomy, the surgeon removes a larger section of the bone (lamina) along with trimming back the overgrown joints and ligaments that are pressing on the spinal nerves. In a laminotomy, a smaller portion of the lamina, ligament, and joint is removed. Both procedures aim to reduce pain, numbness, and weakness in the back, legs, or arms.
