Tintshava ta Drakensberg (The Drakensberg Mountains) This song appreciates the breathtaking beauty of the Drakensberg, one of South Africa’s mountain ranges, so magnificent that beholding it purifies the soul.

AFRICA TIVULE (AFRICA IDENTIFY YOURSELF)

The core message of this album of choral works by the legendary composer Shalati Joseph Khosa is evocative: Challenging Africa to identify and define itself. For far too long Africa and Africans have allowed themselves to be described or defined by others. Much to their detriment - as the African proverb admonishes: “Until lions have their own historians, all stories about hunting will glorify the hunter” (The hunter being the coloniser, the lions being the colonised). The clarion call of this choral collection is: Africa, proclaim your philosophy, take a stand, declare your capabilities and contributions to humanity.

Running through this selection is the African worldview of ‘Ubuntu’ (African ontology) expressed in the song Xa Nkoka I Munhu (The Human Being is Quintessentially Important) as well as these ontological pieces for which I wrote the lyrics: Vumunhu Bya Afrika (Africa’s Humanity), Afrika Rhangela (Let Africa Lead), Nsusumeto Wa Vurhangeri (The Leadership Motif / Purpose Driven Leadership) and A Service Folk Song. This was a most edifying collaborative work with one of Africa’s most prolific composers (SJ Khosa composed over 800 songs during his lifetime).

New Africa is in a sense taking the listener to a joyful state accomplished where Africa lives in peace and harmony, a notion that is further celebrated in Our South African Dream. In terms of its musicality, the former shares pride of place with such SJ Khosa classics as Ndzalo and Tintshava ta Drakensberg (The Drakensberg Mountains), also featured on this album. The latter is a fitting tribute to the breathtaking beauty of one of South Africa’s mountain ranges – so magnificent that it purifies the soul. Also featured are graduation and wedding songs.

This album covers a broad spectrum: Philosophy, culture, nature, history and nation-building, and is for your enjoyment and edification.
