The ministry will meet this week with major automakers like BYD and Dongfeng Motor, as well as trade groups such as the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers and several used car platforms.

This unusual trend is the result of years of intense price wars among automakers, with some dealers registering new cars just to resell them as used—allowing for hidden price cuts and helping companies hit aggressive sales targets. Great Wall Motor’s chairman says there are already 3,000 to 4,000 such listings on used car platforms in China.

The government aims to curb this practice and promote more transparent and stable development in the used car market. Analysts say pricing tactics by players like BYD could escalate competition even further, possibly forcing more automakers to follow suit.
