Chandannagar, also called Chandernagore, city, southeastern West Bengal state, northeastern India, just west of the Hugli (Hooghly) River and part of the Kolkata (Calcutta) urban agglomeration. It is connected by road and rail with Kolkata and Burdwan. Settled in 1673 by the French and expanded commercially, it was captured by the British in 1757 and again in 1794 but was restored to France in 1815 and remained so until 1950, when the French government officially ceded the city to the control of the Indian government. The town still retains some of its Francophone cultures.
Merger with India -
India became independent from Britain in 1947. In June 1948 the French Government held a plebiscite which found that 97% of Chandannagar's residents wished to become part of India. In May 1950, the French allowed the Indian government to assume de facto control over Chandannagar, officially ceding the city to India on 2 February 1951. De jure transfer took place on 9 June 1952. The inhabitants were given the option to retain French nationality, like their counterparts in Pondicherry.
On 2 October 1954 Chandannagar was integrated into the state of West Bengal.
