Seen dogs before? Sure. But not like this.
At Art Basel Miami, the new Zero 10 section opened with exactly the kind of spectacle the art world both loves and fears: Beeple brought in a herd of Boston Dynamics-style robot dogs, each with a human head — Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Andy Warhol, Picasso and Beeple himself.

They look unsettling and strangely friendly at the same time. Visitors are let into the pen one by one: you can talk to Beeple, walk around the dogs, and take photos with this live embodiment of NFT-era art.

And then comes the main trick: from time to time the dogs activate “poop mode” and literally drop printed cards out of their back.

Here is how it works:
• The robots are constantly taking photos of visitors.
• An AI system ranks the images and picks the “most interesting” ones.
• When it is time to “do their business”, the AI processes a selected photo according to the personality and worldview of each dog’s head — Warhol, Picasso, Bezos, Zuckerberg, Beeple.
• The result is printed and dropped as a physical collectible for the audience.
It is ridiculous, sharp and very on-brand for Beeple.

Gallery owners quietly complain that buyers often walk straight past their booths and head directly to the robot dogs. The installation became the unofficial main attraction of the fair. Later, the robo-dogs themselves were sold for roughly $100,000 each, while the “poop” cards went home with visitors as instant artifacts.

Beeple says the work is about how we will increasingly see the world through the lens of artificial intelligence — mediated, filtered and ranked by models before it ever reaches our eyes.
So if a robot dog with a Picasso head starts circling you, do not panic: it is just looking for the perfect angle.
