(23 Apr 2016) Serbian voters go to the polls on Sunday in a snap election that will test Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic's proclaimed bid to lead the Balkan country toward European Union integration.
Vucic and his Progressive Party are expected to win the majority of votes, but they are facing a mounting challenge from far-right groups favouring close ties with Russia rather than the EU.
Radical Party leader Vojislav Seselj is slated to return to Parliament after being recently acquitted of war crimes by a UN tribunal.
While no major surprises are expected, Sunday's vote could tilt Serbia's political scene to the right amid the rise in nationalist and pro-Russian sentiments.
Western countries have sought to keep Balkan nations on track for EU membership, hoping to pacify the volatile area.
But this could fail if Serbia gives up EU integration and turns to Russia instead.
