Otitis media means infection of the middle ear. Why is it more prone in children? Children as we all know are more prone to catching upper respiratory tract infections. Most of the children in the age group of between 2 and 7 years is when they start mingling with society they start going to school and come in contact with different types of people with different socioeconomic backgrounds. Hence they will have cross infections, leading to either cold, cough, sore throat and secondarily will cause an inflammatory response in lymphoid tissue of the upper airways. These lymphoid tissue of the upper airways are either tonsils or adenoids or both. Adenoid sits at the back of the nose called as the nasopharynx. The nasopharynx also has a space where there is a tube, which connects the nasopharynx to the ear called as the eustachian tube or the ventilation tube. Repeated infections and the adenoid becoming big in size will interfere with the eustachian tubal opening and hence cause secondary inflammation in the middle ear, this will lead to what is called as otitis media. Otitis media can be of two types where there can be only fluid accumulation when it is called as otitis media with effusion and sometimes it can be associated with pus accumulation, when it is called as acute otitis media.
