IISS Shangri-La Dialogue 2022 : Military Modernisation and New Defence Capabilities

A significant wave of military modernisation is underway across the Asia-Pacific. Both China and the United States are investing in improved regional postures. A range of other middle powers are investing in new defence capabilities, from hypersonic missiles to nuclear powered submarines. Nations in Southeast Asia are developing improved air, land and sea capabilities in response to perceived new threats. This plenary will examine the nature of these new capabilities, and ask how they are likely to affect the regional balance of power.
