At his Sunday Angelus, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the Gospel of the Pharisee and the tax collector, a parable about pride, humility, and the transforming power of mercy.

The Holy Father said salvation does not come from boasting about our merits or hiding our sins, but from presenting ourselves honestly before God.

“It is not by flaunting our merits that we are saved, nor by hiding our mistakes, but by presenting ourselves honestly, just as we are before God.”

Citing St. Augustine, Pope Leo compared the proud man to someone who hides his wounds from the doctor, and the humble one to a patient who lays them bare and finds healing.

“It is not surprising that it was the tax collector who went away cured, since he was not ashamed to show where he felt pain.”
