This is painful to the horse. If it continues to be ridden with the same cinch a bloody, ulcerated lesion may develop that is slow and difficult to heal.

Clayton Anderson, trainer of 2 year old cutting horses in Weatherford TX explains how he prevents cinch sores on his relatively small cutting horses by using handmade Dennis Moreland Round Ring Roper Cinches. These cinches are made with round buckles which aren't nearly as likely to gall a small horse as a wider rectangular shaped buckle. The round buckles fit nicely in the area behind the colts elbows.

Clayton also appreciates the excess width of the Round Ring Roper Cinch at the belly because it spreads the pressure from the tightened cinch over a wider area. Again, this is more comfortable for the horse and keeps the saddle more stable on the colt.
