Roger Allers, a key figure behind the Disney Renaissance and co-director of the 1994 animated classic The Lion King, has died at the age of 76. Allers was a director, screenwriter, animator, and storyboard artist whose work helped revive Disney Animation during its comeback era from the late 1980s through the 1990s. His death was confirmed by longtime friend and colleague Dave Bossert, who remembered him as a gifted filmmaker, generous collaborator, and kind presence whose passion for storytelling never faded. Allers began his career at Disney working on early concepts for Tron before becoming a story artist on films such as Oliver & Company and The Little Mermaid. He later served as head of story on Beauty and the Beast and received story credit on Aladdin. His most celebrated achievement came with The Lion King, which became a global phenomenon and the highest-grossing traditionally animated film of its time. He went on to contribute to Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, and Tarzan, and also wrote the Tony Award-winning Broadway adaptation of The Lion King. Born in Rye, New York, and raised in Arizona, Allers pursued animation after being inspired by Peter Pan. After leaving Disney, he worked on Open Season, the Oscar-nominated short The Little Matchgirl, and directed the animated film The Prophet. He is survived by his two children.
