It was February 1940.

For this month the images move in the manner of Aubrey Beardsley: black ink like spilled secrets on white paper, lines curling sinuous and decadent, figures elongated into grotesque elegance, barbed vines of war twisting around statesmen and soldiers alike. Each headline blooms into shadow-play—Chamberlain pleading with neutrals, Finns retaking towns amid snow and smoke, Reds swarming with planes and sleds, Roosevelt denouncing dictators while farmers howl in Washington, IRA ropes tightening, homes repossessed in neat columns of figures, U-boats lurking, Altmark raided in Norwegian waters, and always the Finnish line bending but not yet broken.

A single source. A single war. Every day preserved, unedited, as it appeared then. Not truth entire (truth is never entire), but a shard of it, sharp enough to cut through the lies that come later.
