We’ve bought and sold a few fixer-upper horse properties over the years, and while this current place isn’t our forever home, we’re making the most of it—improving what we can until we find something with more acreage.
One of the projects we’ve been excited about from the start is building a 60' round pen with good footing. There was only one usable spot on the property, but it needed major excavation—so we put it off... until now.
With our wild mustang and young mules needing to be started under saddle, we knew it was time. A neighbor helped us fall the dead trees, and we collected rock from the surrounding mountains to build gabion-style retaining walls. Once the groundwork was done, we teamed up with my brother Dalton and built the entire round pen in just 3 days.
It’s rustic, beautiful, and incredibly sturdy—perfect for training, groundwork, and gentling mules and wild mustangs in the future.
