Post-match press conference with Manchester City assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders after their 10-1 win over Exeter City in the FA Cup third round at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City hit double figures, matching their historic 10-1 scoreline from 1987, as League One side Exeter City were swept aside.

Max Alleyne opened the scoring, followed by a long-range strike from Rodri. Two own goals from Jake Doyle-Hayes and Jack Fitzwater made it 4-0 before half time. After the break, Rico Lewis scored twice, with further goals from debutant Antoine Semenyo, Tijjani Reijnders, Nico O’Reilly and Ryan McAidoo. George Birch netted a late consolation for Exeter City.

Lijnders reflects on the defensive moment that led to Exeter’s goal, stressing how difficult it is to defend while running back towards your own goal and insisting City must analyse the situation, create more clean sheets and make James Trafford work less.

He explains why City want as many difficult games as possible to keep improving, speaks about the ambition of Pep Guardiola ahead of a League Cup semi-final against Newcastle United, and describes reaching Wembley as a major target.

Lijnders also pays tribute to the Exeter supporters and praises Max Alleyne’s calmness on the ball, his strange but impressive week after being recalled from Watford, and the impact of City’s humble, hard-working academy players.
