Devil's Wheel - Teufelsrad - Oktoberfest 2024

Oktoberfest: the largest folk festival in the world.
The original Oktoberfest dates back to 1810, when it was organized as part of the wedding celebrations of Crown Prince Ludwig (the future King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The celebration took place in a large square near the city walls, which was later named Theresienwiese (Teresa's meadow) in honor of the princess. The tradition of the annual celebration has survived and over time has evolved into the modern festival we know.

At Oktoberfest, special attention is paid to the individual Bavarian beer, which is brewed only by six traditional Munich breweries: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten. This beer has a special status and is brewed according to ancient standards that emphasize Bavarian brewing skills. At this festival, millions of liters of beer are consumed, which are served in giant rooster tents designed for a thousand people.

The Oktoberfest atmosphere is created not only by beer and food, but also by numerous attractions that attract both children and adults. Along with the usual merry-go-rounds, slides and roller coasters, among the main entertainments there are historical attractions that give the festival a special atmosphere.

Teufelsrad: The Devil's Wheel attraction
Among the unique and ancient entertainments of Oktoberfest, the Devil's Wheel attraction occupies a special place. The attraction consists of a large wooden disc located horizontally on the floor. The disk can rotate at different speeds. A group of participants sits in the center of this wheel, and after everyone has taken their seats, the wheel will spin freely. Everyone's task is to stay on the disc as long as possible, despite the increasing speed and difficulties that ensure fast rotation. As the wheel accelerates, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain balance. The players begin to fall one by one, to the delight of the audience. But that's not all! Ride operators add even more fun to the process: they can throw balls at players, use ropes to hook participants and make them fall, or even send "attack" teams to try to push players off the wheel. The game looks chaotic and very comical, often accompanied by loud laughter, music and jokes.
