Shopping for the holidays has definitely been a challenge this year (2020 amiright)- long lines at store and overloaded shipping companies have added to the usual frenzy of getting Christmas gifts and decorations. What if I told you that you can make your very own Mechanical Christmas Tree Sculpture without having to deal with any of the aforementioned obstacles? Well you can! With your 3D printer and some filament, all you need to do is download the STL files in the link below, hit print, and off you go. Your family will be impressed by your ability to overcome the Christmas challenge of 2020 in a creative, and artistic fashion!

I designed this sculpture using Soldiworks, and the challenge for this project was to create 2 different motions from the single input at the crank. This means lots of 3D printed gears, including bevel gears, spur gears, and a 90 degree gear face. This is so much more than a Christmas tree! It also serves as demonstration of how you can 3D print functional mechanical mechanisms with style and ease.

This will make an amazing DIY 3D Printed Christmas Gift, and you can give it fully assembled or as a kit. Just follow along with this video and in about 15-20 minutes you will have your own fully functioning automata Christmas sculpture.
