Thermal paper is a specialty high-grade paper that uses a chemical material applied to the paper that allows the paper to change color when heated, without the use of ink or ink. The surface of the thermal paper will be coated with solid dyes and suitable substrates, such as fluorane-based leuco dyes and n-octadecyl phosphate. When the matrix is ​​heated to its melting point, the dye reacts with the acidic substance and converts to a colored state; and the matrix is ​​easily cooled rapidly, and the colored state of the dye is directly stored in a metastable state. However, after a period of time, the color will gradually fade, so it is only suitable for uses that do not require long-term preservation.

Usually, the paint turns black when heated, but sometimes a blue or red paint is used. An open source of heat, such as a flame, can change the color of the paper, and a quick rubbing of the paper with a fingernail can give enough heat to produce colored marks.
