Comb Jelly facts: sticky not stingy | Animal Fact Files

Comb jellies might look a lot like jellyfish, but they aren't! In fact, they completely lack the stinging cells that make jellyfish, well, jellyfish! These animals are classified in their own phylum and there are approximately 150 living species. Comb jellies are named so because of the 'comb rows' along their bodies which are made up of cilia. These hair-like structures move in wave-like patterns and are the comb jelly's means of movement! Comb jellies can even swim backwards and some are active hunters. Comb jellies are found in marine waters throughout the world including polar regions, though they're most abundant in warmer places.

Range: worldwide
Size: a few millimeters to over three feet (91cm)
Diet: copepods, other comb jellies, fish and mollusk larvae
Lifespan: typically perish after breeding
