A look at the practice of "mixing at unity".

"Mixing at unity" is the questionable practice of mixing front-of-house using the gain knobs/controls on a console rather than the faders. Unfortunately, this is a common practice and is not the correct way to operate a console.

Adjusting the gain for any input on the console should only occur during soundcheck when setting levels. Subsequent adjustments to the gain are acceptable, but the adjustments should only be slight to correct an issue.
