Starting seven strokes off the lead, Arnold Palmer shot a 65 to complete the greatest final-round comeback in U.S. Open history. Palmer, who started the round by driving the green on the par-4 first hole, edged 20-year-old amateur Jack Nicklaus by two strokes, while Ben Hogan’s bid for a record fifth title ended with a crushing bogey on the 71st hole and an errant drive on the 72nd that found a water hazard.
